"meditation is not a substitute for psychotherapy"
I think Vipassana or dhamma as taught at the 10 day courses is the best psychological therapy, an empirical science. & It's about time it be recognized as such. The trouble is, how can it be made into a pure science? Yes I agree that many do find the repetitions of Goenka instructions objectionable. Also reference to Buddha and Buddhist scriptural authority needs to be avoided if "Vipassana" is to emerge as a science. For only if it becomes a science can it become universally acceptable by all religions. I am in the process of writing about how how the sensation observation technique of "vipassana" can be made into a branch of psychology. Empiricism (Locke) say that the only way to gain knowledge is from experience via our senses.
I would like your feedback on this. And if there is any psychologist among us, I sure would like to know your views on this.

Re: Converting "Vipassana" into a pure Science
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 9:56 AMFor those who have not been exposed to Vipassana taught in the tradition of U Ba Khin (by Goenka), here's a blog of a letter I'd written 8-10 years back, explaining the science of Vipassana (not in scientific language 'though):

We must keep in mind that the Buddha had said that after his death, only dhamma, the law, should be our guide, not he or anyone else.

Re: Converting "Vipassana" into a pure Science
Sat, September 13, 2008 - 8:23 AM...sounds like Scientology. Stay in tech people ^_^ Clear the world! The only difference between Goenka Vipassana and Scientology is that Vipassana does not have a former sex symbol actor to promote its cause. Vipassana has no scientific merit. if any religion or cult had great merit then the whole silly world would be changed. I want to eat a chicken, a fish and any other meat I can find. -

Re: Converting "Vipassana" into a pure Science
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 8:31 AMDon't forget that you are expendable to this religion as I have been. It is an organised religion and I expect it to sue me for saying that but they can't get blood out of a stone! -

Fri, September 19, 2008 - 6:06 AMI would say that anything that you practice for your own betterment is "Therapy".
It is my therapy!
Whether or not you can use it clinicly and have insurance companies recognize it's potential to heal, I guess that's up to the randomness and irrational decisions of the public sector. -

Re: Converting "Vipassana" into a pure Science
Sun, September 21, 2008 - 8:59 AMI have nothing to do with insurance companies dave. I agree with you statement about irrational decisions of the public factor as they are generally tormented and looking for escape. Goenka has just what they need so long as you accept whatever he says(including his own denial of what he says under the judgement of us peasants) and everyone just goes along with what the wankers in charge determine...directors. They are wankers at the top Dave. This 'organised' religious movement is not all that far removed from Scientology. Goenka( who doesn't fund the red cross or any charity that I am aware of) emphasizes serving others. He tells people in the meditation hall 'how it is' while they are deprived of sleep and his jokes wear thin after some time. I am a diabetic too. I would like to see this diabetic cure himself as he is a long time stream winner 'so called'. He is from a rich Indian family so let us see him serve some charity? Serve charity Goenka. Serve the homeless. Serve the servants.
